"Does any one remember a bass from about two years ago with a sort of stone effect spray job with a spider on it? It was good work but I don't think it sold for a great deal."
I remember that bass well. It was Gary Strater's bass. He was the bassist for Starcastle who had just died of cancer. The work was started while he was alive and fully intending on a Starcastle reunion. I think it was originally a 4001 Shadow. It sold for around $2150.00 to a guy in the UK who happened to like it but at the time knew nothing of it's history. I actually bid on it but ran out of steam early since I had just paid my taxes, but I'd have had it if the auction had been a week earlier. Gary is one of my favorite bassists and having that one would have been the next best thing to having Squire's RM1999.

It's been called the "Scabbard Bass" as it has perhaps Egyptian hieroglyphics and a green scabbard (beetle) on it. The front looks like marble or stone, with cracks and flecks painted on right over the pickguard. That's the front. The rear has an airbrushed and pinstriped motif, showing a star castle, stars, and astronomical features on black.

"Freedom of expression is important, but I have learned that people want to know how much you care before they care how much you know."
The only time a bass player gets noticed is when he stops playing.
