I dig those old Selmers! Wonder if they were used on the recording. I've read that the guitar used was an Esquire, not the Combo shown here or a 381.

John that is true. I played in a band in the late 60's and our lead guitar player bought the Esquire from him. The band was 1st called Sparrow, when their Album was released, they changed their named to Steppenwolf. The rest is history......

Dale, this is an amazing story. An old high school era chum of mine is a massive Steppenwolf fan. I have sent him this thread. I hope your friend still has that guitar. Though I have to admit, the combo looks cooler.

Glenn...Give him my Email and I'll put him in touch with Chaz Maly, he's the guy who bought the Esquire from him..This was at the time when they got their Rickenbacker endorsement,,you know all those Transonic Amps and Guitars/Bass.

I'm hair-envious...

It is cool that, endorsement deal or not, they were playing ten year old (or more) combo.

I can't decide who has better hair here, John Kay or the keyboard player.

I have also seen the clip where I believe Kay say while the band faked their way through a medley of their hits on Ed Sullivan.

Dale, I sent your email and this thread to my Steppenwolf fan friend who's named Bill.
