Thank you Ronn! When Paul painted up the 4001S for MMT the headstock remained fireglo except for what looks like a few brush marks of silver.

Shea may have been "sold out" but clearly every seat was not filled.

The idea of those hollow Casinos blasting out of those Vox amps at a volume to fill a stadium is enough to give me feedback nightmares!

I bet Sid Bernstein and Brian Epstein were checking the weather reports pretty carefully in the days leading up to the concert.

Shea '66 was nowhere near a sellout. I guess people figured they'd see 'em in '67, or it musta been that great sound in '65.

hmmm... I'll have to correct Macca next time I see him... he said "we sold out Shea twice".

I found this note which seems to confirm that the second Shea was indeed not a sellout.

•Shea Stadium. August 15, 1965. Box-office was $304,000. Beatles share was $160,000 (£57,000) (Lewisohn. Chronicle p. 199).

•At the second Shea Stadium concert 11,000 tickets had to be given away. The gross for the concert was $292,000 (£104,600) with the Beatles getting $189,000 (£67,700). This tops the money received from the previous Shea concert by $22,000 because of a 10% increase in the contract terms (Lipack p. 92).

There's actually a site called beatlemoney.com??? That is incredible! And so is the site! People, and especially Beatles fans, never cease to amaze me.

But '65 was better:

True, but also I think they played with more joy and energy in '65. Even they were amazed at the scene.

I think they rocked and had fun on the '66 tour, even if the Tokyo videos mainly reveal a jet-lagged band that's taken aback by the crowd's forcefully subdued reaction to said band's presence.

>>True, but also I think they played with more joy and energy in '65<<

This is unproven, though, at least until decent footage of Shea '66 appears.

Though putting songs like Yesterday into the set list, and taking Help out, would naturally change the energy it woudn't necessarily make for a lesser show. Plus the suits were cooler in '66.
