I think the standard neck pickup rout encompassed both 1/2" and 1" positions. The change to 1" happened in 1975 on the 4001, I believe, and all of the 4003, obviously excepting the V63, C64, and CS basses.

Thanks for that little tidbit of information, Ted.

Cheers for that Paul, didn't know when that change happened. But it looked to me like you can see the edge of the pickup rout through the hole - maybe it's the bottom of the rout I'm seeing.

Scott: It may have been done to address dead spots or to improve the neck adjustment. The change followed the addition of lead weights.

"What would possess someone to remove every electronic bit from a Ric and leave the rest intact?"

Here is Donovan's bass with only the jackplate and jack with it's wiring in place.

I forgot that he also has a 3001 (maybe a 3000, I didn't look that close) on the hook in addition to the other Ricks mentioned above.

So, I guess it stems from a little too much Saffron?

I think that's the RM1999 that belonged to the 60's folk singer Donovan Leitch.

Would CS mind if I borrowed it for a project?

I believe Vinnie Gallo is trying to restore it for Chris.

Actually, it was restored by a luthier named Bobcat Dornan in L.A. The last I heard it was on its way back to Chris. I spoke with Chris twice in the last two days; wished I'd asked him if he'd received it yet.
