Memory is SHOT, who makes 4001 Truss Rods?

Sorry guys,

My memory is shot, and I did a search but still didn't find it. TED possibly?

Someone in the past posted that they can make 4001 truss rods...Mine is at the luthier and I POSSIBLY will need a new one. I'll know better in a few days.

I'm still waiting to hear from the luthier to see if it is needed. He said that he would try to re-cut the threads and save the original.

Still looking for the blank black nut though!

Mark Arnquist sells the older style black nut blanks in sizes for guitars so I would guess that he can cut a size large enough for a bass. It will just be a rectangle so you'll have to shape the nut, too, but it isn't that hard.

The Phenolic material is available at most Tap Plastic or Commercial plastic supply stores. It's also called Black Bak-o-lite. I cuts with a simple hobby shop type fine toothed saw or a band saw if you have access

Tony, the currently available pre-cut nuts are available from RIC. They're just a hair wider on each side but a file will take care of that. They also look nicer than the originals did.

I did order a current 4003 nut from RIC but being the slots have to be moved over a bit, after sanding it down, it was too short. I was trying to avoid having to SHIM it. I was looking for a black blank so he could make slots where he wanted them.

My luthier said he can make one for me from scratch, but I was just trying to save him some work and try to keep it as original as possible.

The bass apparently came from the factory in 1981 with the nut and the bridge saddles cut too far to the edge of the G string. As soon as you fret the G string, it slipped off the neck. This 4001 looks brand new, and this was probably the reason it had so little play time. I have the new saddles.

I can't wait to get it back and play it out.

Tony, I just remembered that I have a black RIC bass nut blank. These are discontinued now. These are a bit longer and taller than stock, but are the correct thickness and material so they could be cut for any RIC bass including a 4004Cii5. Six bucks and it's yours.
