DR Flats

Post by lowendbob »

I think some of you where asking about these strings before.
I just strung my J bass with a new set.
DR High Beam Flats
.045, .065, .085, .105
$34 bucks on EBay.

The highbeam rounds are my favorite roundwound, so I thought I give these a try.

So far I have not been disappointed. Very mellow old school flatwound sound. Nice feel to the strings, and I particularly like the heavy gauge of the E string. These strings are a bit on the high tension side, and are not floppy like TI's.
I really don't know what to compare them to except they are a little like Labella flats in tension and sound.
My only complaint so far is that the silk ends on the bridge side extend up far enough that the silk is lying across the saddles, but it doesn't seem to effect the tone at all. These would be great for a string through body bass. The silk wrappings are gold on both ends, and these would not only sound good but would look great on the DCM 4003 IMHO.
I'll give them a few more weeks, and I may have to get another set.
I tried just about all of them, Fender, GHS, LaBella, Pyramids, Chromes, Ernie Ball, TI's, Black Diamonds, Hofner, and these seem to be just what I've been looking for in a flatwound.
Buy it before someone else does.

Thanks for the report Bob. I love the Hi Beam rounds too, especially on the 4004. I might have to try some flats now that you've given a favorable report.

I like em too. Strung my fretless 73 P bass with them and have been really impressed. I think I paid $30 here locally from a local dealer.

I have always liked the DR strings.

i was asking about these strings in another thread. curious about the tension and the sound.i like the sound and feel of pyramids, but they are really high tension.the chromes i tried were i think even higher tension, and sounded WAY too bright and metallic to my ears.ti strings are too floppy and small-gauged for my liking. these sound like a good bet to try out on my 68 tele.
