I couldn't resist getting one of these at a great price. Anyone have any experience with this one?

I have the Sunn branded version, the 300T. Sounds pretty much like an SVT with more controls. VERY loud, clean tubey goodness.
The second channel can add a lot of dirt. I think you will like it. Harmony Central has some pretty good reviews of the 300T.

Now that I have this huge monster, I have a couple of questions because I don't know jack about tube amps except that they RAWK!

The manual says the stock power tubes are 6550C type. OK. I have read in here that KT88 tubes may be a better choice for bass than a 6550C on this type of amp.

So my questions are:
Do I just buy a matched sextet of say JJ KT88s, stick them in the sockets and make the bias and balance adjustments called for in the manual?

Or is it going to be more complicated than that?

Should I just buy some Winged "C" 6550C tubes instead?

Better to ask now than it would be to fry something and then ask!

If you can afford them, GE NOS 6550's will kill anything made today and last much longer to boot. I don't think there is really that much difference in new 6550's and KT-88's, 30 years ago yes. KT-88's were supposed to be able to handle higher plate voltages like in a Marshall Major which called for them. They used to put them in the bigger Mac power amps also.

KT88's may not fit.

If ya got NOS GEC KT88's (DAMN), if not, like Bobampeg said-not that much difference.

Although them blue JJ KT88's look ultra cool!

$600 for a set of NOS GE tubes is far more than I'm willing to spend.

I guess it's the SED C tubes I'll be after.

He was a guy who used to post to this Forum, from an internet cafe in Peru.

Ah these are NOT the original GE blackplates-with the Coke bottle shape I was thinking of, but JAN (Joint Army/Navy) tubes.

Thanks anyway.

I have been led to believe that the NOS JAN tubes would still be far superior to any other Russian/ Chinese tubes. Is that a wrong assumption?
