Ok guys, i have my 1973 4001....

No im leaving the cap! The combination of the toaster in the "old" position, plus the capped hi gain seems to really work! The two pickups have a perfectly balanced volume between them, and i like the way the toaster is like the foundation, and the hi gain the "character"
I tried a 75' 4001 and i thought it sounded awful, the neck hi gain took the "lead" and thr bridge was a pointless little twang.
But with the toaster its like a total bass/ treble separation, which is cool!
Im using nickle round wounds to warm it up a bit and its working nicely

I left the cap in my 79 for a while and it sounded ok, very different from my early ones when they had the cap still in.
But on my 72 and former 75, the treble pickups were little more than as Owen said: pointless twangs, until I took out the caps. When I did take it out in my 72, the pickup was much louder and fuller, when I took it out of my 79 there was not that dramatic of a difference, except in small amps. So I wonder what the difference is? I don't think that the caps values change that much in 4 or 7 years. And to add more mystery for me, Owen says his sounds good. Maybe it was a certain brand of cap the changed dramatically, because as JH has said, they used whatever was available in the factory, my 72 FL is two numbers off Pauls 72FL and mine has a different brands of caps in it.

Bob - i did the cap mod......i HATED it,,,,,and put it back to normal like 10 mins later.
It made the pickup much louder and fatter ,,but as a result the toaster became useless as the hi gain just over balanced the sound.
I can totally understand doing the mod if this was your only Rick (or only bass) but the mod made it sound like a less powerful 4003..i have a very nice 4003 so i can grab that if i need a fat bass tone.
Some people disagree..but i can see now why many see the cap as intergral to the 4001 tone.
and the cap in mine is this small yellow cylinder with a paper label saying "made in tawian" on it

Maybe you have a weak toaster, I did that to my 72 with toaster and they balanced nicely after I did the mod. My toaster is very loud, in fact when people say it is weaker than a high gain I wonder why. My 79 is still more trebly than a 4003 with the mod.
I can't figure out how to open the messenger on this stupid computer today.

I am of the opposite school of thought ... I can't imagine having a capaciter that totally cuts the bass response of one of my pickups on a BASS guitar ... it also removes the mid punch ...
On my 1968 4001 with the original 60's pickups ... toaster and horseshoe ... the .0047 capciter does sound good ... but with the 70's and 90's high gain pickups it is unpleasant ... also then you can't solo the bridge pickup unless you don't mind the fact that it in no way sounds like a bass any more ...

well,,,,with the cap intact, and the bridge pickup raised to what i gather is normal,,,,the toaster is perfectly balanced. I cut down the rubber grommets on the toaster to half size and raise it as far as i physically can.
with no cap, the bridge pickup is actually really powerful , and totally over powers the toaster
my 4003 bridge pickup is of course = very aggressive and powerful, but the 4001 with no cap is just dull sounding. maybe my toaster is a bit weaker than some but it all sounds ok to me.
I just crank up the gain on my trace elliot a bit (i dont like real clean bass anyway) and its a totally useable sound
