Don't know how large the tuner holes are on this thing, but the biggie bushings of those days cover over tunings that have been plugged and re-drilled to 7/16" standard, just fine. So opaque finishes aren't the only ones feasible, unless there are lots of other issues with the carcass.
Simmons' BG lefty 4001, which I refinned, had over a dozen "extrasuplerfluous" screw holes in the front which were plugged, along with the above-mentioned tuner re-drills, and it turned out very nice. Not original by a long shot, but who's gonna knock a gorgeous BG checker lefty?

“I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did.”

Charly, you better believe it, mate
Paul, you make some good points here. This would make a great restoration bass project for a lefty player.

It's probably just me but I don't think I want a bass that's had the headstock separated from it's neck, even though one of the most famous basses in history lost it's head at one time.
Good traditional refin colors for 4001's of this period (IMO) are burgundy, azureglo, and white. Jetglo, fireglo, and mapleglo are just too common (again IMO). Paul should be starting a white refin soon on a 73 4001 of mine.

Unfortunately, all of this year's guitar acquisition funds have been spent. Also, I'm not one to sell something in order to buy something else.
Yeah, I was actually gonna part mine out at one point too....obviously very glad I didn't!!!
John, I probably should have bought yours when I had the chance.

Richard: Well, it was a much better platform to work with than this FG '73....at the time you and I talked having it re-done was not an option. But, once I put it back together and gave it a whirl once again, I couldn't get rid of it. No worries, I'm sure there are other 'Diamonds in the rough' out there.
