When I first saw the title of this thread, I really didn't think I'd like the 4004 with the pickguard, but I think Dane's is pretty cool. Though I can't see doing that on a one of the trans finishes and blocking much of the pretty wood patterns.

I agree Joey, nor the 4004Ci walnut, just because of the stark contrast of the maple/walnut, but also because of the walnut grain.

It would look great on a JG Laredo.

Hey John-
You just reminded me of the small batch of (pre-Cheyenne) Cheyenne-like basses(and guitars) that RIC made for RCA's Anniversary in (I think) 1992. I think only around 9 or 10 basses were made. They look just like the first Cheyennes only they had a gold, back-painted TRC and pickguard. The pickguard, IIRC had an old RCA logo on it (with the dog looking into a Victrola) and was about the same size and shape as Dane's.

That was a cool-looking bass, and a good counter-point to your above point! Does anybody have a photo? I remember missing out on one on ebay about 5 years ago. It didn't sell for much; something like $1300.00.

Bill Henshell has one of the the six-string versions.

I have actually never seen one of the 4004's, but I did see a Cheyenne/Dakota doubleneck somewhere! I think it was also an RCA special order. C'mon, one of you must have a pic!

Wow! That one definitely would take the cake for the RCA series, John B.

I sort of forgot about them. You just don't see them anymore. Other than Bill's, I don't know if anybody at the Forum here has one. I should have snagged the one I saw on ebay 5 years ago! I think they all went to RCA executives and most likely don't get played. Image

I'd think gold would be the only color that could look halfway decent on a walnut body instrument. Finding a picture of one would indeed be very interesting.

And a Cheyenne/Dakota doubleneck.... that too would be something to see! I've fantasized about that when seeing a Dakota.

I think Bill Henshell's is a 12-string RCA, and a beauty!

I'd love to anchor down photos of the RCA bass and double neck for the book. Anyone?

Now that I think about it, the doubleneck was on John Williams' old AURS site, which is unfortunatley down now. It had a nice section of rare/odd Rick pics.

I just got a 4004MG(thanks John!). I agree with Joey on the pickguard covering up the beautiful wood on trans finishes so this bass will not get one. I will however wire it with concentric controls and stereo. It will also get my NOS set of RIC/Schaller gold plated tuners and have the "speed bumps" removed.

Got one of Dane's pickguards today, along with a matching rear cavity cover. Very cool!

Unfortunatley, the bass still needs a lot of work, including a new wiring harness, which will need a new switch, and some HB-1's. I'll string it up and bring it to MARF regardless.

Oh, and I WISH the color really looked like that! In person, it's really rather dull looking. Oh Dale...

I like it.....just buff it up if it's dull!.

How about setting it up with 4 pots like a 4003?

Dane has a special talent in "seeing" things that most of us don't. I think it is a very cool mod!
