Jaco
Hey, Jeff, I saw the Joni concert in '79; Jaco just blew Everyones' sh-- out. Especially when the band left him up there jamming away, he set up an infinite repeat delay, threw the Jazz Bass up in the air, it came down and hit the floor, and basically played itself, while he walked off stage for a few minutes, then comes back, finishes the solo, and the band comes back and smokes to the end!!! Good God!!!That guy was from some other planet...
iS A LITTLE SLOPPY, LOOKS LIKE HE WASN'T TRYING TO HARD AND HE LOOKS LIke he had a hangover and to me that's typical J bass sound with only the treble pickup on which was his usual style, drugs or not, he was still a monster. He was doing drugs all along, just that they catch up with you sooner or later if you are an addict.
During the S&L concert I saw, during Jaco's solo, he put the bass down on the stage floor with the delay going, walked off stage, and then a minute later he came back on stage from the back, got up on the drum riser and jumped on his bass to end his solo!!! The whole band was fantastic really; where else would you find Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker, Don Alias and Jaco all together? Not to mention The Persuasions on top of all that! Joni was riding very high in those days.

There's a great concert video from that S&L tour, on DVD. Great band. I also have the Jaco instructional video. He's an interesting guy to listen do but sad in general. Just imagine if guys like him or Hendrix could have continued working on their craft for so many more years. Stevie Ray Vaughan was headed in that direction too and pulled himself out of it. Too bad his time came too early anyways. That's even more sad.
