Yeah, she was cute, Charly.

But that, er, voice...

Described by Rolling Stone in 1971 as a "crayon scrawl across the lovely sonic landscape laid down by her background singers" (The Edwin Hawkins Singers; this from RS's review of "Candles in the Rain").

Please notice I did not put THAT link up. It was awful! And B&W to boot!!
I just grabbed the two as I remembered her as a young man!

I got a kick out of the fact she just let 'er rip with that voice!

There is another one up there from 97, but the years have not been kind (to me either).

I think she was the first female singer who made me cover my ears.

There have been many since.

oh gosh, just when I'd managed to push her into the deep dark recesses of my noggin, here she is again! I agree with Paul, there were many annoying female singers over the years, but Melanie was one of those who blazed the trail.

and lets all give her an extra round of applause for her virtuoso guitar playing.

Hey, I was the "victim", for everyone elses sake, of an admin edit. It looks "different" than it did, but the forum is better off with the edit, methinks!

I certainly remember Melanie. And was also a bit of a fan. I kind of liked her voice. In Unterberger’s "Eight Miles High" * book she is quoted with a bit of reverence as one of the original folkies.

Unterberger has written several books. I've read two and they're pretty good.

If you followed the link you probably saw that his "folk-rock" history is in two parts. The first book is called "Turn, Turn, Turn." If you care to, you might want to read that one first.
