I have been using On-Stage guitar stands with no problem. They use the triple guitar stands at Mandolin Bros. and I got singles in 2 packs for $9.00 and change including shipping on Ebay. They (Mandolin) had a 1954 strat for $125,000 in one. So, I guess they are good enough for me.

Those (the triple ones) are very cool stands, Don!

I converted to Hercules for my non-poly instruments about a year ago. Not only the finish protection issue, but these are very sturdy stands as well. My Rics are split between the Hercules and the Ric Vintage 3-rack.

Something I read in another forum I thought worth repeating here though is even with *safe* stands, you need to be sensitive to what's on your hands (oils, sunblocks, lotions, etc.) and wipe the instrument down, since these things can react with finishes when compressed by the foam on the stand against the finish. Have no idea if it's true, but it seems like a worthwhile precaution.

Here is a pic of the above mentioned Ultimate XL29B stand. Unfortunately this model is no longer made. I like it because it folds flat, has no loose pieces to lose, and is extremely stable as far as tipping. There are places such as Amazon selling them used when they can get them.

John, they sell the triples there or you can check Ebay you can probably get them cheaper or on the internet. I bought 3 packs of 2 singles and that was the price average. You can buy a case of twelve for $63 + shipping.

I use one of these triples: http://www.herculesstands.com/Images/guitar/GS432BMain.jpg
as well as the single guitar stand.

You can't see the triple stand very well in this pic, but it IS very stable indeed.
