It's here!
after a particularly frustrating monday at work, and a tooth crowned at the dentist, got home, and my 4004cii was there! first impressions, beautiful! very light and the neck is very comfortable to me...it seems like it actually gets a bit thicker at the low end around 2nd or 3rd fret going into the headstock..unusual,but still a nice feel.i also never realized from pictures that the trc has a raised metal lettering on top of the plastic-not actually too crazy about that. i plugged into my markbass combo and played w/everything flat for about 20 minutes at a low volume.(i live in an apt.bldg) and loved the hb-1's. can't wait to hear it cranked! the action is actually lower than i typically like, plays very very easy-may have to dial in a little more "fight". this seems to me almost like an alembic version of a rickenbacker-beautiful wood work on the sandwich, plus this one has the walnut wings on the headstock. i will try to get pix posted as soon as i can.

You'll forgive me, but is that G string sounding as loud as it could? I strongly doubt it. I'm holding a (dead) Rick humbucker in my hand, and I can see that the two blade polepieces in it do not extend beyond the "black portion" of the pickup. And that bridge certainly doesn't look like it allows string gap to be adjusted...
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Yup, been playing this bass for almost a year now and the G string is loud and clear. Part of what you're seeing is camera angle, the string is actually dead even with the black edge. I have the same spacing on my Laredo, but it has no covers so it doesn't look as strange. Of course the neck pickup has a tighter spread.

That clinches it for me! THAT is all I had to hear!
Congrats Woody!

Sergio- If you saw it in person you could tell it's very close to the edge(no pun). Also I forgot to mention I like low action and keep my hb's about 2mm's away from the strings. Trust me, if it wasn't working right I would have changed something by now. And I'm thinking about desecreting a second Laredo in the same manner, I think 4004's make the best five strings out there, you just have to believe.
I know alot of the distrust comes from the Cii/5 problems with pickup coverage but these pickups seem to handle being on the edge. I did some experiments when it was a four string where I adjusted the strings all the way out to the edges like they are now. Then I played it and looked for drop off and worked with pickup height to see what was feasable. I was pretty confident going in to the project that everything was going to work out.
