OT - Why is it the north/south of England or France, but Southern California?

I hate those learning the hard way deals.

I would appeal for forgiveness toward our English brothers. I think they may be one of the few friends we have left.

I would also offer it was a couple of Englishmen, Squires & McCartney, who should get credit for creating many of us Ricknuts.

Oh, and thanks to them I'm driving a ten year old car so I can buy more Rickenbackers, darn English!
I'm just happy to be here.

My comments were in regard to new Ric's only.

Charly. Excellent question. England and France are countries and California is a state. In the US it is referred to as the "South". My question would be why isn't it called the South of the US? Now we are way off topic!

California is in the west. Virginia down to Texas is the "South". But...there is Southern California and Northern Virginia.

Please get it right. Don't make me get all redneck up in this place.

No, California is never in the south. It's always in the west. Southern California is in the west, yet not in the south. ;)

My LA friends never call it the south. They always call the LA basin the "Southland"

Just like Northern Virginia is totally separate from the rest of Virginia.

Yep - it is a suburb of DC, for all practical purposes to those who live there.
