Must be photoshop but why would they bother? Look at the headstock. No walnut wings when every bass in the 60's had 'em. And I have seen photos from that session when he clearly has the psychedelic Rick. Weird.......

This is worth reading. A co-worker loaned me his copy a week ago.

Why photoshop the bass when the real 4001S was plainly visable? They didn't do that to the other instruments.
I recently went back to playing a Rickenbacker bass. Its like meeting an old friend again

"No walnut wings ..."

Also it is a left handed head stock not an inverted right handed one. Page 211 of the Beatles Gear book shows the original photo.

I've been meaning to call their publisher and ask him about this, as I don't understand it either. But my guess is that the other instruments in the photo look pretty normal, whereas Paul's is highly painted in the original photo and Guitar World thought it might offend us or that it would "equalize" the photo out a bit.

That is actually John's Martin D-28. Here is the original with cropped edges in order to fit the forum posting requirements.

Why on earth would they do that? It seems like unnecessary extra work to me . . .

That is BIZARRE...why wouldn't they just use the original photo? Surely they didn't think they could just sneak that one by everyone...?
