My new explorer!

Not quite what you expected?

Well it is from the xbox/playstation game guitar hero. Basically it is karaoke, but instead of a microphone, you have a small scale plastic guitar with 5 buttons on the neck, a small area to strum and a whammy bar.

Now yes, it doesn't compare to my Rickenbacker 4003, or my strat, but this is serious fun! Your asking why I bought it if I can just play the real thing.. I pondered that too for a long while, but the game is VERY addictive, and hard!

As I said earlier, it is like karaoke, you see on screen your band, you choose your guitar, amps etc etc, and at the bottom the notes come towards you and you play them on the guitar in your hands. You play along with REAL song, good songs too!

My favorites are surrender, strutter, killing in the name of, yyz, sweet child o' mine and You really got me.

You get a score at the end, very detailed, about where you went wrong etc, and you can compare scores with friends online, there is also multi player on the same screen!

So if you have kids that won't touch the real thing, or your my age and have nothing better to do, or even the aging rocker, I highly recommend this to anyone!

PS: Is this the first video game review?

Good on ya, Frank!! My son Pat has Guitar Hero 1 and 2 - both with Gibbie SGs. The big problem for him is he's a lefty and he can't play standing up because of the strap button positions. And the whammy bar is on top!!

It's great to watch and really quite mesmerising but I'm a bit of an 'unco' when it comes to games.... suppose I'll have a crack one day. Image

The audio through a good home theatre system is pretty darned good, too!!

Damn! Wait for the Hendrix strat maybe!

You really should give it a go, its great fun, I have to jump to my actual guitar once I feel some creative soloing is needed.

The audio quality is exceptional, its really great how you actually play the guitar parts, if you screw up, you hear your favorite song screw up.

Aitch - looks like me and your son are going to have a jam-off! A friend of mine has the game and I've been sneaking in and getting some playing time on it.

(Favorite right now is Deep Purple's Hush) Image

Tell him to bring it on!

There are some Guitar Hero videos of Cheap Trick's "Surrender" on YouTube.

No Way Aitch - I'll turn you into a video game junky in no time Image

The hardest thing for me has been not going out and getting a system of my own before the trip. I need to be practicing real bass lines and guitar parts for the jam session instead Image
