Owen, Are you sure your plastic cover on your '73 is original? I remember that all the players I met that were playing them back in the early '70s would take them off immediately... I remember it as being kind of a status thing, you know, well NOBODY leaves the PU cover on... I had to leave mine on becuase my dad helped me buy it, and he didn't want me messing it up in case I lost interest in playing bass and we decided to sell it(not much chance of that after almost 30 years!)
A friend of mine thinks that I'm a wuss because I put straplocks on my new American Vintage '62 reissue Strat, its kind of the same thing...
I just remember that all of the basses that I saw in 72-73 (when I first really got obsessed with Ricks) had the metal PU cover and the flat trussrod cover, and then in 74-75 they started having plastic covers and raised letter nameplates, which I didn't care for as much...
But hey, they ARE out there, and I found one for my old 4003S a few years back, I'd just recommend going to guitar shows and checking with all the parts vendors that are there... I'm still waiting to hear from Bob Young about when the next Lima Peru Guitar show will be.... ;-)

Gene, I think there is a Yamaha and Squire show here next week, not interested? why not? haha, no actually I don't know if they have them here or not, I'm perpetually short of cash here, there is supposed to be a place that has a lot of vintage basses cheap though, but I haven't been there yet because of the same reason, but if you come out I'll bring you there. Rics are very scarce here though, so you'd probably have to settle for an old Fender.I didn't scare you from coming to Lima did I? It's not really that bad, it's actually a very interesting place.
Dave did or does your cover go up and down with the pickup?
And does anyone, especially with a mid to late 70's or early 80's 4001 have their cover on between the spacers and springs with the spacers lower so that it raises and lowers with the PU? Also does anyone know when they eliminated the spacers?
And Paul I must confess, if I ever had my treble pickup out of my 72 I didn't notice if it had spacers or not, or a ground wire, I'm inclined to think not though because of the metal base.
I am 8 and 1/2 hrs. away from my 4003's so I can't look at them to see if any have spacers in them, this has me intrigued now. And so does the cover installation, Owen it seems to me that with a short cover like yours that it was probably made to go right under the cover, are your springs any longer than your 4003 springs? And did you ever try to mount the cover in your 4003 on top of the spacers and under the springs? And Gene, how is your cover mounted? Do you have spacers? Does your cover raise and lower with the PU?

Owen,
If you had them on your 4003 they would probably still be on there because I think the springs are too short without them at least they are on my late 70's 4001's I have here.

My '86 Shadow came with spacers.
The big screws went through: surround>cover>bulb head ground wire>spring>1/4" gray spacer>baseplate, if I remember correctly. The cover did not move with the pickup.
Now the only thing taken off is the cover.

Bob,
Yes the pu cover does move up and down with the PU, but I'm not sure it has spacers, and I can't check it till I get into my practice space. But I will let you know... I am looking forward to seeing Lima, and I could be coming there in March sometime. Will you still be there then?

Yeah Gene,
I think I'll be leaving in April or maybe May, it depends on when my wife can get a leave of absence, but it will not be before April, so I welcome meeting a fellow member in of all places, Lima Perú. And actually it's a very exciting place to live.
I should also really know my way around the music situation here by then too. The last time I was here, I had no amp, and was not sure when I was leaving so I didn't really get out much, but this time, si!
Paul, was your cover real high? Because the ones that I've seen with the cover mounted right under the surround were really high and looked bad, except of course Owens and I've never seen a short cover like that before.
