Thanks Elys, wish I had known you were interested in it! Or are you just interested in everything these days? Image

I wish I had know YOU were interested in it before I wrote Andy Image Or I would not have written him. BUT, I do wish you had posted here that you were selling YOUR 4004L before you put it on the Bay - I would have bought it right now for $1100 Image Image

Fact is, I wrote Andy without having seen your post. When he wrote me back and said someone else had already written him, I went and looked on the Forum, saw your post, figured it was you, and then wrote him back saying that you should have it.

In fact, here is the actual copy-and-paste from that email to Andy:

That's cool, Andy! Hope John can put it together, I met him at MARF last Saturday at POTR and like him a lot, good player Image

Ever since the MARF, and seeing the 4004L blue boy there, I have been looking for one. The TR one would have been a second-best for me compared to a blue boy Image

In Jared's words, "damn!".

Oh well, maybe next time you have something choice to sell, tell us here on the Forum first Image Image

Well shoot, Elys! There are two reasons I didn't post it here.

To be honest, i've had it for a few months now and I didn't think anybody here would be at all interested in it! It needs a bit of wiring work, is far from stock, and I didn't think many others, other than me, even liked Blue Boy, let alone a Green Boy.

I usually DO post things on the Forum before I go the eBay route, but in this case I also knew that you wanted Andy's Cii and that i'd have to find a way to come up with the money FAST. I took a shot in the dark on eBay and it sold in seven minutes.

Elys, I really am sorry. If I had to do it all over again, i'd have sent you an email first. In fact, whenever I sell anything in the future, i'll send you an email first! Image

This was tempting, but without feeling that "shaved" neck profile I held off. Those late 90's necks are club like, and not to my liking at all. The headstock will be the shorter version too, I presume.

Still, a new guard, and that thing will look very impressive. If it still has the V bobbin too, it will sound as good as it looks.

Thanks, John, that's so cool to be on your short list of folks you go to first when you offer gear Image

The funny thing about this white v63-ish bass that caused me to hop on it is that I believed it to be a real v63 and not a modified 4003. The reason is the fretboard - the missing dot tags it as a real v63. It is much harder to take a dot away than to add one in a refin. On a hunch, I jumped on it and it turns out that the neck wasn't shaved, or anything else. I actually bought a real 1998-model year v63 for $1650 here Image Nothing has been changed out, except the buyer had several bridges and put the shiniest one on. He still has two others that are legit Rick aluminum, and he is including those too. The only other thing that was changed was the fake (non-magnetic) shoes were removed before he got it, and he asked a music store if this "4003" bass needed anything, the slow-wit at the store told him he needed a cover and sold him a 4003 cover plate, which he let them put on, and then after taking a good peek at it they tried to low-ball him to buy it.

Fortunately, I have a variety of HS pickups, both real-from-lapsteels HS and newer reissues from eBay. I can put the shoes back on. Image He said he will send me a pair of shoes that most likely are the originals, since they were in the case with it. Here is the actual cut-and-paste from the eBay email he sent me that documents it is a real-from-Rick v63:

Item: rickenbacker 4003 WHITE (220107205008)
This message was sent after the listing closed.
ivo1320 is the seller.
I have flat aluminum saddles as you pointed out that I will send along with this guitar. I have learned it IS a V63 from 1998. I have no history on what color it was before or where the work was done. I was told it has all REAL Ric parts, but if you think the bridge is a replacement I will gladly send you some sort of refund for the wrong info on my Ebay listing. I apologize for any trouble that I might have caused you about this guitar, I'm not a bass player I bought from a friends family after he passed away, that's why I know so little about it. It looks and sounds fantastic. The local music store said it had a missing shiny cover over the back pickup and needed one, so I bought it and had them put it on. They also told me that it was such a perfect and unmarked finish that it must have been recently refinished and so wasn't worth much anymore (and then offered to buy it for a ridiculously low figure because of it). That new pickup cover is the real RIC part that I added, and it is the only brand new thing besides the little bridge piece that the strings notch into in back. I also have these two U-shaped things for it with holes in one end of each that were in the case in a bag, I will send those to you too. When you receive the item let me know if there are any problems.

He said on a subsequent phone call that he had removed the three-screws from the truss rod cover, and it was white inside there too. He could not get the pickguard all the way off, but could get the bottom end raised up a half inch and used a flashlight to peek under it. He said it was white under there too. In fact, white was a standard Rickenbacker color from 1970 until 1999, so 1998 is the next to last year that AW was offered. Personally, I don't really think it was refinished, the music store knew it too and tried to rip him off, it is just a really minty original that he thought must have been refinned because it was in such perfect shape Image

This is getting more interesting all the time!

If it's a factory finish it should probably have a "WHT" inside the cavity and a date.

I think Gary Clauson has a picture of a cavity from his factory white finish.

Andrew and Elys, here's a picture of the control cavity of my February 1998 (N1 date code) 4003 WHT WT:

Image

Note that not all of the cavity is white (there is some wood showing) and the presence of the factory label.

I wonder if this is the V63 that my brother recently refinished white for Ken S. He sold it on the 'bay a couple months ago.

This explains the neck "shaved to '63 specs."
