The only Ric I own that has problems is my CS, which doesn't have enough back bow to use the stock strings tuned down a half step.
The only other ones that I've seen that had serious problems were due to the truss rods being either stripped or adjusted incorrectly.
My S5 is a little beefier than the others (except the S8).

Jeff,
I bought a 75 4001 that had been (I think) sitting for a long time with no relief in the neck at all, it was like new several years ago when I bought it. I could not get it too budge until I put Med. gauge Fender flat wound telephone lines on it with the truss rods loosened, and even then it took a while to come forward a little, but once it did, it was fine, I was able to adjust the relief in it the way I liked it. That neck was like a rock and it was the old flat type too. I was able to use lighter gauge strings after also.

I was refering to type of neck that has all of it's relief in one spot that will never adjust out
I has a CS 4001 that had a back bow in the first bit of the neck that changed to a foward bow in the other half. No amount of adjustment, dressing and even heat treating would fix it. I gave it back and got a 4003 that had a great neck.
I just traded in that same 92 4003 as payment for two thirds of the 4003S/5 which has a neck that looks very promising. Strangely enough even with the extra hardware the 5 string was lighter than the 92 4003. It actually feels about the same weight as the 64 4001.
The sound was a little off as the strings were a bit old and they are the standard nickel jobs (On ricks, I like Rotosounds)
So hopefully I will get enough work to pay the rest of it off (and sell a couple of other toys)
Oh by the way, I saw Yes play on the 20th and then met them at a sign in on the 21st. How can you say all you want to, about what their music has ment to you etc in 10 seconds? I kept stuttering and got up a good knee tremble too.
Alan white was elsewhere But I got the signatures of the rest of them. Wow!

I confused Faraday's cage, with Schrodinger's cat box....
Eden,
Don't be so nervous around them, they are only people like you and I. Back in the mid '70s I got to see them a few times. The first time I met them was November '74. After the show in Indianapolis, my friends and I were invited to Chris' motel room to talk. We spent over an hour discussing all kinds of stuff. Then in '75 we saw Yes in Pittsburgh and before the show we went to the Hilton near the the venue figuring that's where they were staying. Sure enough they come walking in and I had my dulcimer with me. Jon Anderson had a wooden flute with him so we sat down and jammed for a while!. Later that summer in Cleveland, the morning after their stadium show with Joe Walsh, a friend and I had breakfast with them. If you don't act like a jerk (I don't mean you personally, I am being general here) these folks can be very ingratiating.

I know the feeling Eden. Even the most calm and cool person can be a bit apprehensive around people they admire, especially when they want to create a good, or at least not create a bad, impression.
It is hard to articulate just what these people mean to us, and in many ways it may not be wise to even try. I have found that a "thanks" most often gets the point across, without me trying to babble something coherent in a few seconds.
I hope you enjoy the new bass. What color is it?

Eden, did you but that CS brand new or was it second hand? Just wondering how a neck could get like that unless it was stored for a long time in someplace with no strings on it with tight truss rods.
A friend of mine took off a mint 66 Jazz neck and put it in a draw with the truss rod still tight and the thing bent all over the place like an S, it was never the same after that. (it was one of those with the block inlays that are famous for bending wierd because of the blocks though).

The CS that I had was a brand newie and after having it in for the same waranty work three times was enough. My 360/12 is also a little wobbly But I have almost corrected it with heat treatment, and light gauge strings.
I have also seen a few other rics from the same period with off necks and lacquer checking.
But I must say that the other two big companys (you know who they are) were also sending some strange leftovers. I'm pleased to say that since then things have inproved and I have seen some real special bits of gear from The big three lately!
The 4003s5 is Jetglow and I also like the look of the treble pickup, a real hybrid. I just hope the 4003s5 is as stable as my 4003 was.
