650 Atlantis

Post by Grant »

Back in 1991 I almost bought a 650. The purest in me wouldn't let me (what with the humbuckers and all). I do love that style guitar though! So, Flash to Sept. of 2000. I finally break down and order one. Just got it Yesterday. Wasn't sure how much I would like the neck (being wider than most Rics). I also prefer a thinner neck. I'm not a great guitarist and need all the help I can get.

From my non professional, bedroom guitarist view...I really like this guitar. The only pedals I use are a Danelectro distortion and a Vox Wah Wah. I'm too confused in my normal life without having a bunch of pedals. I'm not much for the neck position on any guitar, but this one sounds pretty good to me. I really enjoy the middle position and bridge position.

The only thing that has me puzzled is where all the weight comes from. LOL For such a small and incredibly thin body it does have some weight to it.

All in all this isn't much of a post, I guess. I'm new here and haven't seen much talk about my favorite Rics... The Crest Wave series. I think the 400s and 600s are the most beautiful looking guitars out there! I actually had a 370 12 string and a reissue 1997 about 5 or 6 years ago. I just seem to like the smaller solid bodies more.

Now if I could just find a 950, I'd be set. And as much as the tulip shape would be a more vintage guitar and probably worth more... I would love a Crest Wave 3/4 scale 950.

Thanks for letting me ramble.

Hey! Not a ramble at all! In fact, I agree with you on the crest wave look. I, of course, will always like the "sweeping crescent" of a 320 or 325, but I do think the wave was a fantastic way to change it round a bit.

My first Rick was a 620 Deluxe with Rick-O-Sound. After that I had a 320, but now I have a 650 Dakota. So, subconsciously I must have some thing for that wave design!

Congrats on the new guitar! I also have a 650. Mine is a Dakota with the optional vibrato. I, too, like the look of the cresting wave.

My first reaction was the exact opposite as yours, though. My other solid-body RIC (260 model) must weigh almost double. So, when I first strapped-on my 650, I remarked: "Woah! This thing is light and comfy!"
