I had not even thought of the noise! The Ipod is a great idea. Thanks. Are you arriving Thurs. or Friday? We have not booked yet (I think) I am just as excited as he is. I would love to be able to take the whole week off.. but it is the very first week of school and I will be having a new principal... so I do not want to start things off on the wrong foot.
Is there anything else I should plan for? I mean other than the noise?

Tammy, we leave Melbourne on the Wednesday morning, fly across the Pacific Ocean via New Zealand. The flight takes about fifteen hours and we then land in LA, two hours before we took off on the same day! Image

We figured we would head to Hollywood for the first two days and then drive down to Santa Ana on Thursday night or Friday morning.

Tammy, don't worry about flying, I've flown to Great Britain 3 times in the last 2 years and I'm not a comfortable flyer either, you'll be fine.
I'd be more worried about driving around in that SoCal traffic...yikes!

Terrific another thing to worry about! The traffic...
And Darren take Pics in Hollywood as I dont think I will have time to get out there.. whirlwind trip is what I see in my future. I should start writing my lesson plans right now so they are out of the way!
It is odd I have always had a huge fear of flying but I want to go so bad that it has taken a back seat to the thought of going out there...

Hey Tammy. If it's fear of an unfortunate incident, remember that driving to the grocery store is much more dangerous than flying, statistics say. If it's the heights thing, just pull the window shade and pretend you're in an elevator. I know a guy who gets tanked before the flight and takes a little nappy-poo the whole way. Like most fears, it's the kind of thing where once you've done it, you will likely look back and wonder what you were worried about. Oh, and the iPod thing is a great idea. MARF was my first flight since getting an mp3 player and it was invaluable. Or is that valuable? Whatever, you know what I mean! Image

EDIT --- Oh, yes, and remember to bring plenty of gum to chew. It alleviates the little ear-popping thing (like when you ride an elevator up a really tall building). And if you get car sick easily, just eat light that morning and don't worry because they have little barf bags in the seat pocket in front of you. I've never seen anyone use one, though. I hope I have helped and not hindered your endeavor!

Jdog it is not the fear of the unfortunate accident that concerns me .. i is the ten seconds prior to the unfortunate accident that concerns me....

When I was out for the 75th, I found the traffic to be quite tolerable, at least down in the SA area.

Tammy, we can go to the Sawdust Festival!

The taking a plane is less dangerous thing isn't exactly accurate. There was a study done that shows that considering how many miles all planes fly per year vs. miles driven by all vehicles that the ratio of death per mile is about the same. An accident is an accident and the odds are always about the same......all things being considered. So whether you like to fly or drive it doesn't matter as far as "which is safer" is concerned.

When I was growing up one my friend's father was a pilot for Pan-Am. I never saw him sober when he left for work or when he came home......I tend to believe he wasn't sober in between. I would imagine that times have changed (theoretically) but, on that note, there really isn't anything I need to see that requires me to fly and I happen to love driving so I'll stick to the ground. My wife always laughs at me because I'll race my car, search dark warehouses for armed suspects at work or get in high speed car chases but I won't get in a plane. We all have our issues I suppose. I fly back and forth to the UK regularly. The only thing that ever bothers me is the drive to the airport here in Tampa with the Florida "drivers".

People here can't see, drive drunk, don't wear seat belts, have no arms, (ever seen someone use a turn signal) and spend their driving life talking on their cell phone. 80% of these people couldn't get a license in Europe.

I'll put my feet up with my copy of the Times and a nice vintage red and let the professional up front take care of the rest.

No question which is the safer...

I believe you may have missed quoted me Tammy. I said guys don't like the phrase "that's a cute little...". The two words cute and little together are what causes the problem. Cute by itself can be used sparingly.

I may drive to SoCal and stop in Wyoming on the way to climb the Grand Teton and Teewinot so if you two want an alternative to flying at 30,000 ft you can climb to 13,770 with me.

The vintage red sounds good... do ya think they would just give me a bottle and let me self medicate? The Tampa drivers sound horrible.. but to put it in perspective I live in Bushwood.. where if there is a tractor in front of you then you have hit "traffic".... until they wave you around them.. then you are good to go again.
I decided this year that I would try to over come some of the fears.. I am getting to OLD to spend my life being afraid.. crud it is already half over...time to step up to the plate and enjoy life....
