OK, now that we're clear on the friction vs. gravity thing...
The bushings bfinish the holes off, sort of a trim piece, but they primarily provide a second bearing surface for the string posts, which do take a substantial load when the bass or guitar is strung up.

Got it. Thanks!
Now then, why does Rickenbacker have to be SO MEAN to people who make guitars that look JUST LIKE THEIRS?

Cause someone told them that Mark Kaufman is making all those guitars, that's why !
!!
BTW, it is usually my wife who complains of the friction burns. Nylon carpeting is the worst....

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, and sit in with the band whenever you can, to keep your chops up!

Mark..the hole in the wood/peghead is exactly .500 that's 1/2inch...the ferrel/bushing that fits in the hole is .510..that's .010 of an inch over size. These are compression fitted into the hole and that is what holds them in place..not gravity or friction..this the way most all tuning machine ferrels are fitted, some tighter than others, such as Kluson tuners.
...by no means, Elys! Try to slide in on an artificial socker lawn (as a defender has to do sometimes to stop the striker), that friction burn can get you peeled off skin up to the bloody bones! THAT is max. friction and gravity!!!

Of course the ferrules are press-fit, and press-fits function due to friction. If there was no friction...
The gravity vs. friction posts were meant to be humorous, for anyone who thought otherwise.

My wife and I encounter friction every time we drift too near politics. AIR-fools is more like it....
