Scott, don't give up on the 4004 series! Your only problem is you had the wrong model. Next time try a Laredo, they are lighter, the neck is thinner, the tone is brighter and more 4003-like. The Cii's are better looking basses(prettier wood) but the Laredo's have the sound that's closer to what you're looking for. May I suggest one of these....(not mine....yet)....

I agree on the black hardware, when mine finally gets here it will be blacked out(except fretboard) and called the Brian Crisman S.E. in honor of his support for the 4004 model....
.
I would take you you up on your offer Andy but mine will be a five string and requires different hardware.

here's a nice little trick for a 4004 user who wants to get a 4001/4003 sound out of their bass ... replace the 500k ohm tone pot with a 1000k ohm tone pot ... this adds more treble bite ...
I would have liked to work a way to keep both basses ... but I have 2 really nice 4003 basses already ... I also have a 4004ci and a 4004L but no cii basses until now ...

Congrats on the trade deal Jeff and Scott!
Scott, I agree with Mark....try a Laredo at some point. I was never able to get a decent tone out of my Cii. Certainly the look and playability was wonderful but the tone was always kind of muddy.......regardless of strings or amp settings. The Laredos OTOH with flats sound full with plenty of bite. It does an excellent 4003 impression when needed as well.

Ray - that baby cleaned up nice!!!!!
Reid - saw you're welcome thread - I'll welcome you here. Want some more eye candy?
That's my #1, 2004 Laredo. I still have my original 1975 4001 Burgundy - although I bought it used in 1981:

Wow, the more I look and read, the more I think a 4004 would be good to have. I read a bit about the electronics mods some guys do give flexibility in vol and tone shaping. Seems pretty cool.
Ed - thanks for the welcome and the eye candy! That FireGlo 4004 is knocked out! I've always liked BurgundyGlo 4001's, too!
