For me, other than the knobs, it's the maple neck with the dark insets. Looks out of place to me.

A couple of versions of this are still available - according to the JB website, current list price is Â£1499 / $2278!

After perusing the web site, they certainly aren't trying to hide their 4001-based designs.

The maple neck and dark insets look wrong to me too, to be honest, but 70's Birch basses are dead rare. I had to have it!

I was in Songbird on the weekend and noticed the Birch doubleneck wasn't there. The salesperson said someone had been interested and it had been set aside pending a possible sale. Anyone here care to fess up?

That twin-neck has been there for at least 3 years to my knowledge. They probably couldn't find anyone that could handle it.
Birch basses are awesome, never could understand his rear scratchplate idea as they build up static very quickly & have to be earthed.
BUT - for tone - NOTHING - as in NOTHING beats them!!!

Gee, I wonder why.... Time was not too long ago we would have been ripping this bass and auction all to pieces. So far this thread has been about how nice it is....

Ahaaa- so that's what happened - it had been up once at a reserve of £500 - and didn't sell, 2nd time around I put in a marker for £350, then it disappeared.
Same thing happened with a Tele I bid on at the same time - I thought I had a pox on Ebay.

Nektar's Mo Moore has a 4/8 Rickenbircher which he used on "Recycled".

That 5/10 is something else. Is it a short scale with E-A-D-G-C (plus octaves on the 10) tunings? Must be the worlds first ten string.

An acquaintance of mine has a Birchenbacker/Rickenbircher that he lent me a while back. Short scale, weighed a ton, couldn't work out what the knobs did despite instructions telling me! I borrowed it with the intention of buying it as a spare (I only had one Ric at the time) but I didn't get on with it at all. And no, it didn't sound anything like a Ric.

Here's one of the Nektar guys with an interesting double neck. Looks like a Birch.
