Gas Guzzlers
Gas Guzzlers
Ok, how long can you keep gasoline in a plastic jerry can before it deteriorates?
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Doesn't sound very safe or practical. I think the quantity required to make it worth while would be unmanageable. Believe me... I thought of this myself a year ago!

Peter,
The real answer is: it depends.
The short common answer is: six months.
As far as I know, plastic is not the issue (as long as it is an approved gasoline container and all other safety and use factors are followed).
As you probably know, states and local governments have all sorts of rules about gasoline use and storage. I suggest one always check and see what those regulations are.

It will keep longer if you a some Stabil® to it. That being said there is a difference between summer blends and winter blends. The additives in fuel that make it evaporate, RVP, will not keep under certain conditions. For example, when we do cold environmental chamber testing on engines in the summer we have to refrigerate the winter fuels or the additives will evaporate and you will lose the ability to properly start and run the engine.
