Ampeg B200R amp popping at power-up...problem?

Post by squirefan01 »

I have had my Ampeg B200R combo amp for about 8 months now. Until the past week or so, when I'd power it up, the output would fade in nicely, maybe as the tube was warming up. This would take about 5-7 seconds to start fading in.

Now, all of the sudden, it just pops loudly after the 5-7 seconds, not fading in anymore.

I unplugged the input cable and that did not make a difference. I bypassed the horn with the 1/4" plug on the back, and it still pops.

This is my first new and/or Ampeg amp, so I am not sure if this is normal or not. Could there be a problem here?

Thanks in advance

In the "same, but different category": my B100R pops when I shut it off & I know many other B100R owners have the same thing. It's never caused any problems to my knowledge...

I called Ampeg and they said it was probably OK and the change is just due to a break in period for the amp. I probably had a good 150 hours on it before the popping started.

This is probably a general amp question. Just wondering if it's really normal or not.

Thanks

Some SS amps pop and some don't, in my experience. It is annoying on stage if you have to turn one off! I like the standby switch on the SVT.......I turn on and off through standby.
