Dane - did you finish the fretless conversion on the 4004? If so I'd like to see pics. If there's a thread with some just point me to it!

If you sell the squire bass you will get enough money to buy a 4003 and a p-bass and probably a 3rd bass ...

Ed, the fretless conversion on the 4004C is complete, but I just haven't gotten 'round to taking any pics yet. I should be able to get it done by this weekend...I hope

And Jo, wise words indeed. Although I have to say even if I did have a "bottomless income" (what a nice thought!) my girlfriend would freak once I got beyond 4 or 5 anyway. She doesn't really see why I need more than 1, despite me explaining it countless times!!!

I like having different instruments. I like lots of different styles of music and feel that each different instrument makes you think/play differently, which is what keeps it fun for me.

Shaun, I promised to keep the number down to 4 or occasionally 5 in a trasition period. The count at the moment is 7, so a couple of mine are going to have to go. Watch this space.....

I've purchased five basses in the past year; three rics, a MK Dragonfly (five string fretless, very cool!) and a made in Mexico Jazz Bass... The F****r is a nice change of pace with a sound and feel all it's own, the Rics will always be my favorites, but nothing sounds like my old Guild B302 - Crunch, punch and tone for days. It's really nice to have the variety. Hey, my favorite bassist, Chris Squire, often shows up with a P or J himself.

I have to confess, I bought a Dean Edge one off of my old saxaphone player, with the intention of flipping it on the 'bay, and its turned out to be one of the most playable and good sounding basses I own.

I got $100.00 in it.

I'm in the other 50%. No P-basses, jazz basses or anything else. I play everything I can get my hands on and nothing beats my 4004s at nailing the magic tone that's in my head. I really enjoy Dingwall basses and I was quite taken with a Pedulla Rapture that I played recently but neither quite gets the tone I like or feel quite as nice as what I already have.

When I only had 4003 basses I was chasing a tone with a little more low end.....at that time I was test driving lots of other brands to get a more "solid" tone. Then I got my 1st 4004 and I found it to nail what I was after. I really like having one basic signature tone that I use for all situations. Having different basses with different tonal ranges or drastically different character, to me, is a PITA. I understand why some prefer different basses for various situations but, for me, my tone fits what I play so it always works.....not need for other basses. Basically, I'm a simpleton.

I've been in both camps. Had a Tele & then a P bass.
Nice feel & vibe, but definitely not the players that RIC basses are & just don't cut through a mix as well either, so both are gone.

I've NEVER found a J bass that I could afford!
I may do what Jeff Rath does & build my own some time, but an authentic MIA Fender is way out of my price range.
For the equivalent money I could (and would) buy three Ricks.
