Posting of eBay and YouTube Links

Post by firstbassman »

OK, at the risk of becoming the victim of the forum’s wrath I have a question.
What is with the posting of so many YouTube clips? And to some extent, posted links to eBay auctions too.
If the link is to a RIC auction, I can kind of see the point here. But all of us are perfectly capable of going to eBay and doing a search ourselves.
And as far as YouTube, don’t get me wrong. I have enjoyed almost every one of the clips. But my gosh, there must be thousands of music related clips now on YT. I can post a link to any one of them and start a thread.

Peter, how do you feel about this?
The Topics (especially “Others”) is growing longer and longer recently with YouTube clips.
Just highlighting and asking.

Respectively and humbly, yours truly.

Why post anything at all? To share; to make others aware of something that you think is interesting.

The links are merely shortcuts and do much to make the search process comfortable.

Well, some of us do not have much time to search clips on youtube; and some - like me - don't have a ebay account and do not search ebay either; and why not discuss links anyway?

I love the links! Keep them coming! There is so much new stuff on YouTube all the time. It's very hard to keep up without a little help.

Amen, Greg! It is a welcome gift to have someone else take their time and effort to make it easy for the rest of us to share in something that is particularly interesting to that ForumBrother or ForumSister...

I used to get my "jollies' posting on a political blog by debating using song lyrics. Since I have soured on Politics, I need another outlet. Lyrics tend to not go over so well here, and it is not as much fun when not really debating. So, I found youtube, and love finding old rare footage. If I were ever asked by the powers that be to cease and desist, I would do so with no argument.

I enjoy both the youtube and ebay links and think they are a welcome addition. I see things on this forum I am not especially fond of also and have learned to ignore them and go on to something else. This has become a fairly big community here and we must practice a little live and let live maybe.

I would say if you don't want to watch them don't click on the link I upload tracks for others to listen to but not many actually download the stuff, which is fine.

No wrath here, Mark, but I wouldn't like to be governed down to a "no linking" policy.

Absolutely! Nobody forces anyone to click, and everyone chose for themselves what to read/discuss and what to skip...
(btw, if some people do not comment, that doesn't necessarily mean they do not download...Image)

For me.....the best thing about the forum is the feeling of direct interaction (also know as friendship) here....I hung out at a surf music forum for awhile and it was way cliquish..is that a word? Anyway..the links for you tube, ebay etc along with the general sharing of knowledge, pics and info makes this space what it is..coool!

I post alot of youtube links to music vids and other stuff(Diver Dan etc)that I feel others here might enjoy. It's because I used to work in a used record store in the 70's and 80's and like, when ever a friend or some one I liked came in I would always find some cool to play for them and say "Check out this Nightcrawlers(FLA)LP".Gee,I sure wish I could find a video of "Little Black Egg" on youtube.Hey,wanner hear something cool? When Lester Bangs died,my store bought his record collection from his Estate.Stuffed into some record sleeves were letters from Robert Christgau and other famous people.Too bad there was no Ebay in 1983.

Mark - I'm with you all the way on this one! Thanks for speaking up! This has been a sore subject for a while.

I questioned Peter this about a month ago in a private email, as the posts have been grossly packed in this thread.

"The Others" used to be a forum where other instruments were discussed or off-Rickenbacker topics, in general. In the past there were occasional youtube posts. I enjoy youtube and there have been some unusual posts here that I have enjoyed, as I'm sure others too.

What I recommend is another thread for youtube posts. There seems to be enough interest here that it could carry its own weight. Obviously, the majority like them here in "The Others" and I am clearly with Mark in the minority. I think it is a better option than the "if you don't like it, don't click on it" opinions offered. In this forum I liken the you-tube posts as junk-mail.

As it appears this forum is a catch-all for non-Rickenbacker, maybe it's time to better define it. That's not a bad thing. What do you think, Peter?

Seems to me if it's not broken don't fix it..there are youtube posts on other spots around here such as Clough's Classics and there are many ebay links under the for sale, Rick bass..etc...I haven't had any problem passing by links I'm not interested in checking out and for me the forums are not overloaded with them anymore than the run of puns we sometimes have fun with..I say just pass em by if not interested...

Well, I think a new thread would be fine. But these posts, like George says, will still happen elsewhere where they are pertinent. It would, however, result in less "clutter" in The Others.

But it's sort of like robbing McCormack to pay Wylczinski.
