"The Beatrips" must be one of the funniest Beatles tribute bands around, their musicianship is spot on but they didn't quite master the English language.

I was buddies with a troupe of Vietnamese musicians on my six-month stay at Tan Son Nhut (Saigon). Perhaps some of the older fellows here who were in country would remember "The Dreamers"? They were a family of performers and they would just nail covers of the pop songs of the day, doing near perfect vocals and instruments. As I became friends with them, I was surprised at their rudimentary ability to speak English. I ended up coaching them on lyrics to a few songs as they were not quite sure of the words. I even got to sit in with them a few times on stage, playing bass. The bassist had a genuine Hofner 500/1, the first I ever played. They even included me when the whole band got new shirts. Most, if not all of them, got out and moved to the Vietnamese neighborhood in Orange County somewhere.

I was in the Navy so never got on land. In the Phillipines, Tagalog is the language and they have no V or F, so when they sing, it comes out like "Put your sweet lips a little closer to the pone"! They also say Pipty Pibe cents for 55 cents. I hope I don't sound like I am denigrating them in any way, it's just the nature of language. They could mimic spot on, except for the V and F! I heard a 9 year old that could mimic Grace Slick!

Our ship's rock band (yours truly on bass) used to sit in when the bar band would go on break. Everyone loved it, and it was a blast! Filipino groupies!! The reason I bring this up, I went back a year later, happened to run into the same band in another bar, and they invited me to sit in on a couple of tunes. The only problem.....I'm a rocker! We decided on Superstition. I, of course, started out on the Jeff Beck version, and they on the Stevie Wonder! It took a bit but I eventually funked up the Beck line!

Also, check out Flying Horses on youtube! They're a Wings/McCartney cover band from Japan, but they also do some Beatles and Lennon covers now and then too.
