Getting back to roots

Post by marc61 »

I went to see my daughter's spring concert tonight. It was outdoors, she plays violin in the orchestra.

What impressed me was they gave a couple of school rock bands a chance to play. First up was a group of 6th graders who played original tunes, that were definitely classic rock and blues based. Then some junior high kids opted for the heaver stuff and rocked on a Iron Maiden tune, then Metallica. The lead guitarist was excellent.

That's really cool when schools will encourage stuff like that. One of the local high schools that I sub for and coach for does a battle of the bands every spring and have all of the students' bands participate that want to along with the faculty band. It's a really good time and showcases a lot of talent.

I agree. My daughter also plays violin and her younger sister plays saxophone. I get to see orchestra and band concerts in the same school district I went to, class of '79, in the same gyms and theaters. No rock bands though, so far.

The school district was pretty fair to me in the late '70's. They let us put together a fully-amped pick-up band in order to perform Alice Cooper's "School's Out" for a pep rally during a class period. I remember some bands my age that would play great, daring tunes like "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" and "Too Roling Stoned" while a few of us watched in awe, the others bored but excited to be there, hoping to figure out how to date...the band I was in played songs like Zeppelin's "Song Remains the Same" and Frank Zappa's "Black Napkins" for hours at chaperoned gigs in the high school cafeteria on a Friday night, full of crazed dancers and smeared mascara and hidden beer.

Now we're recording "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" for fun, Daddy's girls and I, and we're adding some sax and violins to it. They sing pretty good harmony too! ("Maxwell must go free...") Lots of fun.

Someday my wife and I will tell all the old tales to our daughters. But not yet, not yet.
Here is where I hide my music:

I remember a battle of the bands at my HS in the late 70's. One of the bands was called Fallout, and while you could see the talent, they finished last in a group of three.

Later, after various incarnations, two of the members put together a group called Type O Negative, who recorded a gold album, and lived their childhood fantasies by recording a tune with Ozzy, and also joining him on an Ozzfest tour.
