Forty years! Hard to think it's been that long. But being 16 at the time of its release, it feels that long.

Amazing sound quality on that album, especially when you remember that it was recorded on four tracks!

It certainly was a masterful production! What I would like to hear, but never have in all this time, is the mono version.

Interesting segment on NPR yesterday about Pepper's. Had one guy arguing it was the greatest rock alum of all time - another guy saying it was not even close to the Beatles' best. Thought provoking stuff. As for me, I prefer Revolver. That being said, time to blast Pepper's through the car stereo!

First non-compilation album I ever bought (it was January 1976), as I kept reading about how great this album was. Saved up my allowance and shelled out $7.99 for it. It was stunning to listen to, especially to an unjaded 12-year-old, and I acknowledge it's pivotal spot in pop music history, but the album as a whole leaves me cold somewhat.

I much prefer Revolver, and Rubber Soul. Heck, even the White Album.

But it's still a notable date. Geesh, it just seems like yesterday we were marking the 20th anniversary...

I'm really surprised there wasn't some special re-release of this album for this anniversary. Even if the catalogue is being remastered or whatever, they coulda made a bundle off some fancy rerelease.

I think Revolver is their best.

However, SP does have some timeless songs, some that simply evoke the period perfectly.

It also has some amazing sounds.

And when it was released, seemingly the whole (western) world united. It was all anybody listened to and talked about.

Previous to it's release, certain segments of the press were openly questioning whether the Beatles had lost it.

Yeah, it took them a whole 10 months to get another album out after Revolver, including a break period and John making a movie! I remember seeing something from Dick Clark talking about the Beatles drying up before it's release.

Ever notice that whenever Sgt. Pepper is discussed, the conversation invariably turns to a comparison of which Beatles album was the best?

I figure that must make it one hell of an album.

Damn good point. A few of us here at work made the same comment earlier today. For the most part, even the Beatles' weaker songs/albums (did they have any weak albums? - maybe Let It Be, but many would disagree) are good.
