What a GREAT bass. Love the way it looks!
BF sn# eh?? I find that REALLY interesting, it's the latest I've seen with the old pickguard still being used. I have to wonder when the new-style white pickguard was first used....we were halfway thru 1962 when this bass was made.
WHERE are the 4001s from this period???

This is a fabulous thread!
I've always wondered what was happening to bass guitar production during the period 1960-1963. I'm glad that I can now fill a few brain cells with this information.
The pictured example is bloody brilliant.

I have my doubts on such low numbers, but also doubt that any information will come to light to dispute the "factory" figures used in the Smith book. I can only make a "hunch" that there more made than stated in Smith's chart. I doubt anyone at RIC would be able (or willing) to find complete records. Just my feeling.
