Finish over the neck binding?

I suspect I may have made a very big mistake with my '93 620 this evening. I was playing it, and I noticed an especially greasy mark on the neck binding. I absently rubbed at it with my thumb nail and, the finish flaked off like sugar candy. It's coming off the length of the neck now, all I have to do is run my thumb nail along it and off it comes. It doesn't carry on to the fretboard or the neck, but solely over the binding.

Advice? Sympathy?

steve - i wouldnt worry about it. If it were a brand new guitar maybe you should.....but it may have something to do with the finish not sticking to the binding as well as it does to the rest of the guitar. You picked a spot off, and now the finish is free to peel.

i have a much older rick bass (1973) it has binding that has turned yellow due to sunlight etc over the years. There was a spot on the neck binding where the finish was picked. The neck finish was all sticky and lumpy, so i VERY finely sanded it. Theres now not much finish on the neck binding, but i cant even tell the difference

Now stripped off of both sides. The guitar looks better, and given a few layers of polish and a few months of play I shouldn't notice the little ridge any more.

Just think,if it were a gibson or a fender it would be worth $4000.
