4001S on eBay - should the paint be falling off?

Well, I looked inside my 4000 which was built around about the same time as this bass, and it's identical, right down to the 4000 inscribed inside. I'm saying modded 4000, but that's not a bad thing. If I was still living in the UK, I'd snap it up at that price.

Some were "modded" at the factory.

I've got a feeling my 4000 will be "modded" soon too. After I put the RIC horseshoe in it, I just fell that a nice toaster would compliment it. I think it will probably wind up that way eventually.

My all-original 1975 4001S WHT WT came from the factory with a Model 4000 TRC:

I agree that the damage to the one on eBay appears to be water-related. A little water over a little time would be enough to cause the peel but not discolor the wood.

you know theres not many houses in the uk that have basements or cellars,they are quite rare unless the house is really old, so i would rule out the basement theory.

BTW, this bass didn't reach the £895 reserve - highest bid was £721 (roughly US$1,400)
