Push Pull kit on a '75 4001

Post by captain_jetglo »

Hi guys, I've recently bought a "push pull kit" to have more range of sound on my bass. So, I have a question, is it really worth to install it on a '75 Rick? should I leave it as it is? you know, sometimes I'm scared to change things on my bass, and I'm not shure if it is a good move. Please, give me an advice before I do something I'd be regret of. Thanks

The nice thing about this mod, is that you're not doing anything irreversible. Hang on to the old pot, and it can always be put back the way it was.

Adding the extra tone cap cuts low end from the pickup it's attached to. Being able to switch it in and out gives you the best of both worlds. I say - Do it!

Ok, my bass already has the yellow cap, should I use the new one besides the old one? A cap for any different pick up? that might sound more McCartneyesque at Penny Lane that McCartney himself. :-))))
Thanks a lot Kris. I'll do it, I liked that of "The best of both worlds"

Sergio,

I have found the push-pull to be useful on my DCM. I was trying to find the part to add it to my '05 4003 but couldn't find it on the Ric page...what part number did you order?

I remember reading something awhile back, on this forum, that the new pull switch was a bit deeper that those on the 70's basses. This meant that there was the possibility that you would have to remove some wood for it to fit properly. At that time, it was also mentioned that the switch was being slightly modified. Has this taken place? Are the new switches a drop in replacement now, on the older basses?

Check with Mike Parks at the Rickenbacker Page; the last time I talked to him he was awaiting shipment of the new switches.

I ordered the switch from RIC for my '87 4003. I did have to deepen the electronics cavity to fit it in there. I had a guy do it at my work with a drill press, and it was very hard to watch!! I think it needed about another 1/8th of an inch to get the switch to fit.

John Hall did say that there was a year that this cavity became deeper in the 4003 models, and it must have been after '87 but I'm not sure when.

Does anyone know how to wire up this sucker?

I purchased one of Ebay with the resistor and I want to install it in my C64S. She needs a bit more low end.

Tony, there is a schematic on Joey's website that is more of a pictorial of how.

Sergio - to see if it is worth putting the cap switch in (as mentioned you may need to do a little routing for it to fit) just take a stiff wire and wrap it a couple times tightly around both ends of that yellow .0047uF cap. This shorts it out directly connecting the pup to the pot, and is what the switch would do. That way you can see if you like the sound without the cap in circuit and make a better decision as to installing the kit. And if you do use the kit, just replace the tone pot for the new switch and run the wires for the switch to both sides of the existing yellow .0047uF cap. The one in the kit is for 4003 basses that don't have that cap in them.

Hi Mark, I just bought it to a guy in eBay, and I don't know the reference. Anyway, besides Ken Joseph information, have a look here at Mike Parks page:

He seems to have it.

Thank you all, specially Bob, Greg and John. I think is a pain in the *** to drill the wood. Maybe I'll leave it as it is now, anyway I love vintage sound, although the possibility of having both sounds, sounds great.

Sergio, to ease your mind, just jumper the capacitor out and that is what it will sound like with the cap out of circuit. Then you will answer that question for yourself - do you like the sound. If so, an alternative many did before the new switch/pot was offered, was to use a mini toggle switch laying in the treble pickup's routing area to switch when they wanted and it was out of the way and no mod to wood or plastic.

Ok John, I'll try this option. You know I'm not that handy with circuits but I have the diagram that guy gave me with the pot/switch. I know this may sound ridiculous but, where exactly should I place the toggle? Thank you again
