The Big SoCal Jam

Post by jdogric12 »

Greetings forumites!

It's time to start thinking about jamming. And rocking. Hard.

If you would like to participate in August's jam session at SoCalConIII, please send me an email. Be sure to tell me what songs you would like to play or sing, what instrument you want to play (and whose!), and if there is anyone you want to pair up with.

We'll be sure to include everyone that wants to play, best we can. It will be hosted by yours truly in the classic "open mic" style. I graciously accept this task courtesy our own Joey V., who will surely be one of the rockers to see.

I'm sure Charly G will have the blues, some locals will show us 'tourists' what's what and say 'hello hello,' perhaps a little "thunder from down under," and maybe even some intricate obscure gems from the East Coast too...?

The goals are to 1) have fun, and 2) get a nice taste of everything Rickenbacker instruments (and forumites) have to offer. No models or finishes will be denied!

Stay tuned, and remember, send me an email, don't only post here. Include "SoCal Jam" in the subject, so if you end up in my spam folder, I won't delete you!

We also need a small PA for vocals, and maybe a couple mics, please.

So, to play at the confluence, we have to decide now?

One, say who suffers from serious stage fright and can't imagine jamming at the moment, cannot decide to play at the confluence on the spur of the moment?

Just asking.

How organized is the jam session going to be? Charly's Rickenbacker blues tune for the event is one thing, but having set lists and sign up sheets and such would seem to remove one of the best elements of a jam session, spontaneity.

I am a big fan of spontaneity; I suggested a simple jam in the Deadhead sense of the word. Pick a few chords such as modulating up in minor thirds starting on Am for example and just have fun improvising. Obviously for those who want to play actual songs would need to plan in advance.

Now you've lost me, Jeff...... "modulating up in minor thirds"?? OK for you guys with some sort of musical education - what about uneducated chord hounds like me? Image

Please explain..............

I think Jeff is being a smart alec...LOL. But seriously, just jamming or improvising is something that everyone can do without actually knowing the technical terms for what they're doing. Playing specific songs too should be a priority, but that's usually based on there being guitarists/singers being present like Kenny who can lead everyone in song..as it were. Between the bunch of us there's gotta be a couple thousand years of expierience playing so it should really just kinda "happen" like last year and the year before. Just my opinion of course.
