Hi guys,
I was on holiday in Italy when Shawn Luckman gave the sad news to my daughter who phoned me that Tuesday evening.
I was stunned to say the least and the last few days before coming home gave me time to think about Dave and the seventeen years and more that I had had the privilage of knowing him.
Back in the late 80s I had bought a 4001 re-issue bridge to scavenge bits for the RM DA24 that needed a some renovation. Once I realised that the new bits were a different thread and shape I put the bridge in a drawer and fixed the original as best as I could.
A while after I see an ad in Guitarist Magazine readers ads asking for Rickenbacker bass spares or parts so I rang the number to see if my spare bridge could be of use.
Thats when Dave Carr and I began our friendship.
We must have been on the phone for ages talking about Ricks, bass playing, bands and inevitably..Yes music.
I think I put the bridge in a jiffy bag and just sent it anyway and we went on from there. We met at the Guitar Show thats held every year at the Manchester University buildings down the road from my place and when Yes toured we always got together at a show and traded stories over drinks before and after.
One Monday morning in January 1991 Dave called and said he had heard news that Rickenbacker were going to bring out a Chris Squire Ltd edition bass.To this day I dont know where that news came from but as we had the European Rickenbacker office in Bury just fifteen miles from my home I rang them straight away and having bought bits to renovate DA24 they already knew me which probably helped.
I asked about the Chris Squire bass and they said it was due out in June that year...we have one here at the office thats come from the Frankfurt Music Fair..."can I come over to see it?....forget that..can I buy it?"..mm..well its going to Guitarist Magazine for an article with Chris who hasnt got his bass with him....we can have it back by Friday so you can arrange to buy it through Anne Mellor at A1 Music in Manchester."Leave it with me I will ring A1 NOW!"
So thanks to Dave Carr.. "my mate Pete" as he would say in that lovely North East accent managed to get the CS that I own and treasure today.
Dave would have the odd pint at his local at the end of a long week and give me a ring only to find my answer machine at the other end of the phone if I was on a late shift or gigging.
Undeterred he would press on and when I checked the messages there would be a twenty minute Dave event...I wish I had recorded those!
One time I had a call from Dave from Cyprus..and I thought it was a post pub message. He had lost his keys on the way to the resort and as I work at Manchester Airport he was having a car key sent to my place so he could drive home when he got back. No problem except when I eventually got to his car theres a crook lock on the steering wheel! Can you imagine how suspicious I looked hacksawing the thing off in an airport car park....and then driving off in another car!?
Thats the stuff that mates are made of..priceless and its what makes this life worth every moment..thing is with Dave you knew he would do the same for you...I blew up the speaker for my bass pedals just prior to a gig and Dave drove 70 miles to drop a Trace cab off for me that night...I still have it..thanks Dave.
As far as Ricks go Daves 4002 is his pride and joy. Theres the Blueboy "Frankenstienbacker" that had a hole in it and was left for dead by some punk band that Dave brought back to life...its a great player. The 4003 CS alike that Dave did is a tremendous bass...they can be seen in the photo I took that Jeff Thomas posted earlier.
What a guy. I will miss him so much.
I spoke to Daves wife Julie yesterday to arrange things for going up North Tuesday 3rd July for Daves funeral. Julie is a lovely girl and as many of us know on the forum it takes a very special person to put up with us lunatics!
She has been coping as best as anyone can and you can be sure Dave has lots of friends in Norton so she has had lots of support that will continue.
Dave had been suffering from a tight chest after a bad cold and he intended to visit the doctor to get checked out. Typical of us blokes we always play things down and think it will pass.On Tuesday morning he went off to the office and when he felt unwell they called an ambulance to be on the safe side. On the way to hospital Dave suffered a fatal heart attack.Julie is just thankful that Dave passed whilst being cared for by the paramedics and wouldnt have suffered.
I will pass on all the love and regards that I have read and I thank you all on behalf of Julie Carr, thanks guys.
Now if we can get those faders up higher and play with a bit more feeling...is that loud enough Dave?
This notes for you mate!
