Never a Big Hit, but Still Selling

Post by lyle_from_minneapolis »

A discussion elsewhere of the Velvet Underground album "Loaded" made me wonder about 60's albums that were not very successful or well-regarded upon their release...but they are still selling strong as ever to this day.

Any other nominations?

Best example I can think of is "Pet Sounds". Released 41 years ago this month to deafening silence from consumers; reviewers raved.

It's stood the test of time. As groundbreaking as "SPLHCB", for different reasons.
“I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did.”
