I got a response now, but it is interesting that the message I sent them was changed to something totally different, their's being very generic in nature. Auto-response, folks!

The luxury of having infinite email accounts from which to send has enabled me to do a test.

There are 87, count them, 87 different and unique auto-responses that are produced by this email response bot, in response to a test body of identical messages sent from 1000 different email addresses here today using an email script I wrote.

Yep, it is a bot. This is NOT a personal or original response from a real warm body. Not Chris Squire, nor anyone else.

I must hand it to the programmers of this bot. It is a well-done and well-crafted pseudorandom response bot. Its intent is certainly to make people think they are getting a personal response from someone, Chris or otherwise. Their intent must be to have further promotion done using Fora like this, by achieving an illusion and to have folks compare notes and remark that since each response was different then this thus must be a real personal response from someone....

I am hoping that someone will get a real response from Chris, but I can tell you that they always start repeating, there are no more than 87 of them, and that some actually appear to be realistic personal responses from Chris himself. Image That part I don't like - not after having received 318 responses out of the 1000 test batch that appear real but are identical to different test addresses.

Next is the repeat testing, which will probably show that once a set number of messages are received from the same email addy, that the response changes further to appear even more real, with replies using parsed portion of the "from" address to make it appear that one's name is being used in the reply in a personal fashion.

The first response was certainly like that, Elys. However, I did get a second e-mail independently that answered some very individual comments I made in my initial e-mail to that address. It is unlikely that a bot was able to respond with the message I got the second time round which did include the original body of my e-mail, unlike the first response.

I, for one, do believe that Chris, or at the very least, his wife, did in fact respond personally the second time.

More likely that, in my as-yet untested multiple email from the same address case, that it starts to get farmed out to a "call center" of folks that do answer emails personally, on Chris' behalf.

This is what happens, for example, when Mr and Mrs America send a letter to the President. A bevy of workers in one wing sit all day long and answer those letters personally, many thousands a day, as they have for at least fifty years now, and each letter response goes out under the (bulk reproduced) signature of the President, but in reality he never sees or signs them himself. They do make it seem as if he has, though, you'd never know...

There are dozens of companies in the industry who do the same for all comers, including promotions like this one. We have done them in the past ourselves for sports heroes and their teams. Just not a bot with this many different pseudorandom responses before.

I do hope you really did get Chris Squire dropping by and answering a few of these himself, including yours. Anything is possible Image

But the odds of it really being him and not one of hundreds of call center workers is astronomically small....

Auto response is okay with me. especially if it means that Chris is out recording or playing music. At least he did respond professionally.

Anyway, all I know is that this week I'm travelling to England and it started with a email addressed to me and signed by Chris Squire! That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Image
