Post by cavernplayer »

Can you tell me your likes and approx. what I might pay for such a combo? Also, how's the sound.
Thanks

Combo's just never worked for me. They all lack something in my book. Not enough power, to small, to heavy ect....

I prefer a small component rig. A good power amp with plenty of headroom, and a nice lightweight rack. With this, you can try / choose multiple pre-amp and cabinet combinations.

You can go as small or as large as you want. Very versatile and probably the most economical in the long run.

I was looking hard at combos a few months back before I settled on getting a 4x8 cab...

I was drawn to Genz-Benz, they had nice looking stuff, but I can't remember the model. Someone was selling it used, it was a 1x12, and seemed with an extension cab would be more than adequate.

I was also intrigued by the Carvin BRX212 - 2 12's, on firing down, weighed about 70 lbs, 500 W out of the box, and the amp can be run at 2 ohms. I might still eventually get the head that runs that unit...

I have a Yorkville XM 200. With the exception of the new Trace stuff, I have yet to play a combo that delivers the goods as well.

I'm not really a combo sort of chap either, but I just got this on ebay. Small but perfectly formed...

This is my main rig:

Its an early Trace GP11 4 10 combo. Sounds fantastic, and built like a tank. The only con is that its super heavy.

Cool! Great price, too!
Now just add a 2X10 combo & you have a really interesting ROS rig.

I have a Yorkville combo, the 200 watter, it rocks plenty hard. It's my favorite out of all the ones I've tried and gotten rid of.

I recently bought a Mesa Walkabout with the 1x12 scout cab. It's essentially a 300 watt 1x12 combo, and it sounds fantastic, very warm and punchy. The advantage with it is, the amp can be removed from the cab, and sit atop a pair of 8 ohm cabs of your choice, (a 4x10, and 2x10 for me), making it a bit of a monster. I like the option of carrying it out as a combo, with lots o headroom, or as part of a larger set up. It's a bit pricey, at $1000.+, but it really rocks my 4003 to the core.

Although I really liked the Walkabout when I tried it with several basses including Alembic and Status, I couldn't get a Ric sound I was happy with (I tried my 72 and a friend's 4003). They are a great unit though; loads of volume for their size and a nice eq. The best small rig I've used was an Ashdown Superfly through an Accugroove cab (essentially a 1x10 with I think 2 x6s).

I tend to agree with Scott regarding most combos though ; they always seem the worst of all worlds.

ANother satisfied Yorkville owner here. I have the XS400 head, but I used to have an older Bassmaster 200 combo that was the cat's pajamas. Really miss that amp...

And VERY affordable -- especially used. Best bang for your buck in bass amplification.

I suggest the Ampeg 112: real Ampeg sound, low weight, sufficient volume for monitoring, line out for the PA, reasonable price, it just loves Ricks!

The Mesa Boogie Buster combo was freakin sweet. Very heavy though but if I had to use a cab I would take one.
