Mike, the 4004s are mono output, two volume controls and a tone control that shades both pickups. By perfecting it, John meant they left it off.

Actually, the 4004 has a single master volume and master tone control for both pickups. It is just that certain folks prefer individual volume controls for their pickups to get just the right balance between them, so you occasionally see 4004s with three pots instead of two pots and a switch.
