Albatross

Post by royclough »

Peter requested this so here's a bit of fun, you'll need winzip yo unzip but I think most will have winzip if not and you want to hear and I know some won't let me know, I'll send separately.

Three versions named 1, 2, 3 let me know in order your preferred versions or if you would rather just do it on forum just put 1 version 3 etc.

Roy: My vote is for 1, 2, 3. I would also like to know if anyone has the Peter Green Splintergroup recording of Albatross which I believe is more acoustic.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

I would like to put 321 in true Dusty Bin style, but my order is 2, 1, 3. I don't think you can beat Fleetwood Mac's version, I guess version 1 is The Shadows. Don't know who three is.

I'm with Jim...... 2, 1 and 3. I find #3 doesn't reflect the wistful, haunting nature of the work.

I thought the bass on #2 sounded fuzzy. Perhaps It's because I got the free download version Image

I thought #2 sounded kind of muffled. Perhaps why it came in third for me.

#2, which is the original and was recorded 40 years ago which is why it may sound not quite as clear, is the vastly superior version for me.
#1. was OK except for the synthesized strings which sound cheezy as they always do.
#3. was terrible IMHO, sounds like 80's elevator muzak.
I could not guess #3, Cindy Lauper?, haha!
I too would guess #1 was The Shadows.
The bass in #2 is clear on my stereo, LP version, it's got I IV bass chords which computer speakers may not be able to handle.

Does not look as if any more are going to vote so results were, Fm'Sversion was actually at a higher bitrate, have not got a clue what that means except higher the bitrate I understand, better the quality.
1. Shadows 1.75
2 Fleetwood Mac 1.875
3. Spotnicks 2.375

I took the average of each placement

FM did receive more number 1 placements but some placed it at number 3 which reduced the average.

To my surprise Spotnicks version received two number 1 nominations.

Thanks again to those who entered into the spirit of it. Now need another version of something as I enjoyed this and a surprise result.
