I always wear special rubber gloves and a half-face organic vapor respirator when handling the stuff, and advise anyone else using it or any other solvent to do the same.
Occasionally we film with a full crew in my big spray booth (15' X 30'). The film crew have only to walk in the vicinity of the booth and they complain of headaches. At this point I hand out respirators.
Anyone not used to the fumes from solvents will experience headaches and shortness of breath, even at very low concentrations.

All this talk of acetone reminds me of my short time in the fiberglass boat-building industry, around 1966. We regularly had do de-goop our hands of excess resin from working in tight quarters with a quick dip into our own personal coffee-can of acetone! We did this many times each day whenever we were laying up a new hull. I shudder to think what this has done to the guys who did this for years and years...

Short-term dermatological effects include excessive drying, or stripping, of the epidermis of oils necessary to retain flexibility, and necrosis of the mesoderm. Long-term effects include increased risks of melanoma and other cancer, as well as toxicity to the brain and other CNS tissue due to infusion of the solute into the body through the skin. This occurs short-term with vapor inhalation to a much, much greater degree.
You lose a serious number of brain cells due to the vapor inhalation! Severely reduced IQ and both short-term and long-term memory performance is a symptom of this brain damage.
Toluene is worse by far, but neither is a picnic for the brain

Wow. Having undergone a hundred hours or so of hazmat training in the past 4 years, I am aware of, and preach to my students on, just these hazards...
...but never have I read it in such elegant, dense prose.
Elys, are you getting my less elegant e-mails? I have not had a reply from you in weeks.

Eureka! By all means leave that neck finished and avoid the risk of acetone-related brain damage. Also please strenuously entreat any female who may be in or even near your life do her nails under a fume hood (like under the kitchen range's exhaust fan) or outside the house - and stay there until they dry and no more polish-smell can be detected. Even that small amount of acetone in the polish remover and in the polish itself, when breathed in enclosed spaces, will scrambled-egg her neurons in short order. It is one of the greatest health hazards in the home, and one that is largely ignored by millions of men and women around the world daily.

Gawrsh, thanks. Force of habit, all that training in med school so many years ago sticks with ya...

Sure, I got your last email on July 4th, thanks!
But I am not saying it was in any way inelegant. Your prose is always top-floor, far better than any of mine. I wrote something to you within the last day or two about the acetone thing but have not yet received a reply.

Yecch, dunno, can't speak for any mail servers other than my own, so I guess I am going to be spending some quality time in the detail logs over the next few days and figure that one out
But I honestly have not received anything from you since July 4th..
Thought I had the anti-spam thing figured out with the low-grade anonymous public server accounts (except gmail.com, still having trouble with that one, systemwide). But yours is not one of those.
That is so weird, especially since your email is housed here for jingle-jangle.us and I usually author mine to that server...
