Thanks to everyone. I'm basically retired to the world of playing covers now (the money is great!) and it's interesting to see how an 8 works on some stuff, from Green Day to Bon Jovi to Alice in Chains. I use it for about a quarter of the set so far.

I used to play a 12-string bass pretty much exclusively. I love the sound, what can I say?
Now it gets used on maybe 7-8 songs a night.

Those nine string Conklin and Warr basses always evoke images of one of these.

It's actually possible to get the action a bit lower with the "common" string arrangement since the octave string can now be lowered to the same heighth off the fingerboard as the fundamental string. The "stock" string arrangement meant that the octavestring had to be a bit higher in order for the top of the string to be level with the fundamental string so you wouldn't miss it while picking downward. With the octave string lower, it won't stretch as much and therefore setting the harmonics will be more accurate. You won't notice the need for separate string saddles as some with the old arrangement have complained.

That 9 and especially the 14 string basses look like the LA freeways! Even with big paws, they have to be a ***** to play.
