Once again, I'm late to the dance...but it's never too late for a little 'Monday morning quarterbacking', eh?
Anything that changes in one's environment is a shock that requires some physical or mental response...we're wired this way, and some part of the brain is instantly engaged in compiling a list of possible negative outcomes. It's just safety first: wrap your tail a little tighter around the tree branch before deciding your next move, fellow primates. One luxury of showing up 'tardy' to this discussion (the second one I've posted to since having to do my first 'post firewall' log in) is that many of you had already eloquently stated the downside of this 'New Forum Order' before Peter made the decision, and I have nothing to add, really...
Well, not really...as to 'the public' not getting to see our postings, and this resulting in no longer being joined by new members the likes of Sheena...or me...or even YOU (and you know who you are), I would simply suggest that it's up to us from now on to let interesting folks read over our shoulders and see if they want to join.
(Of course, we only want the 'right sort' of members...and someone's got to get going on the Secret Handshake design...)

I didn't get where I am today by being on time...
Well, Dane... i think new members like me not joining won't be a big loss for this place, heh-heh.
As an afterthought: i'm currently working on a book (it's boring as hell, but that's another story) about "changes" and "transitions", and it states that once the time of a "transition" has come, resisting the change is useless and may only lead to bad consequences, because changing means development, otherwise you're stuck in a moment not knowing what to do. Maybe that's just the case - the time has come for this forum's "transition", after all these years of being a house with open doors to everybody? No matter how shocking it may be, apparently there's no way back... only forward, to some new point which we cannot predict...

Nothing will get you dead quicker than being deadly serious about yourself.
Sheena, I'm always stuck in a moment not knowing what to do...the only advantage to aging is slowly acquiring some idea of what to do when you don't know what to do.
This phenomenon is referred to as existence.
(Oh sure, there are loads of people who are constantly claiming they 'know what to do'...unfortunately for the rest of us, they frequently aspire to positions of authority...)

As a famous Russian singer/songwriter Alexander Galich sang (in my poor translation), "don't be afraid of a begging bowl, don't be afraid of prison, don't be afraid of death or hunger, but only beware of those who say, 'I know how it should be'." Sounds kinda paradoxical, perhaps. But that's another story...

Peter - I'm a late comer to this thread but loggin in does not bug me at all. I would think on the outside there would be enough in the site title to make it a hit on a web search. Maybe on the cover page a list of the Topics to be found on the inside... anyhow thanks for everything you do here - I for one really appreciate it.

I like logging in on the main page - it keeps me from having to do it in Edit Profile!
When I first found this forum, I joined without hesitation. The only difference now is that newcomers will have to join before they can see the forum, and I don't see that as being a big deal. I'd think that if someone is interested in Rickenbackers, they won't mind joining. If they're not interested in Rickenbackers enough to join the forum, without cost, and find out...
Anyway, I'm totally fine with the new system.

Too bad about Mr. Galich no longer being with us. It would seem that he was a member of the minority, who have a keen sense of perspective.
On another note. I took Sheena's advice about setting a profile up to auto login and guess what? I don't have to log in here anymore at all, even when I am opening the forum for the first time after closing my browser completely down. Has anyone else experienced this?
