The color on the EM website ain't bad at all...but that flake is huge enough to trip over or draw blood from your poor hand...

$875 ain't bad for a MIJ Fender off the rack. For the most part, the quality of the workmanship is very good...where they fall short is the quality of the electronics which is often upgraded by many players...so..the question is..if you have to swap out the pup's/switches/jack/pots and wiring, why not buy a USA model in the first place? When the MIJ models FIRST hit the USA. the necks were soooo much better then what Fender USA was offering..also the overall construction/fit and finish was way better. Unless you really want that finish on this model, you're better off buying a USA made...

Walter, that is a very thoughtful and though-provoking review. (Not the least because it reinforces my own preconceptions about this guitar!)
A Fender that plays like a Les Paul is like a Ford that drives like a Chevrolet. Oh, wait a minnit...Fords DO drive like Chevrolets, and the Major guitar guys are now beginning to tread into Branding Hell.
All except for RIC, that is...

My CIJ '59 JM replica, as well as my CIJ '65 Mustang replica (both bursts, and the Mustang has a MOTS guard) were both around the same price, including 48-hour shipping from Japan, and quality is still excellent on the Japanese Fenders, I hasten to add.
Except the pickups...they are WEAK, to say the least. So there's $150.00 to spend right there. But I am not complaining.

We have a town named after us..."Wilczyn"...a Polish friend says I ought to go back and see if our house is still standing; that it is possible to hire a lawyer and reclaim the property, since a good deal of this land passed through Nazi hands and lost its provenance at that time. Property records, however, were saved...

I'm very please with the fit & finish of my CIJ 62 RI Tele. However, all of the electronics has been replaced, much like George had indicated.
As far as the finish on the J.Mascis signature JM, it looks as if was paint scheme was chosen after a visit flea bag hotel that was last decorated in the 60s.

"Polish" as in, "I'm gonna Polish my Ricks today."
I did think about the DCM comparo, so here it is:
The metallic particles on the Mazzy are HUGE. The ones in the DCM (which are mica or synthetic pearl) are appropriately tiny.
And therein lies the difference between fleabag motel and the Four Seasons.
