Fixing string buzz from bridge?

Post by ben »

I am getting an annoying string buzz on my Rick 1997 SPC/VB which seems to be coming from the bridge rather than fret buzz. I am using heavier gauge flatwound strings, whereas the last owner used much lighter strings. It is most noticeable on the B string.

I suspect it is because the strings aren't sitting properly in the notches. Does anyone have any other ideas, or suggestions on how I can fix the problem? I wondered whether I could get a good quality file and have a crack at slightly widening the notches myself, but I don't want to do any damage and maybe it is a job for a pro? Unfortnately there aren't too many guitar techs in my neck of the woods, so I'd rather do it myself if possible.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions.

Try this first before widening the saddle notches:
When setting intonation, move the saddles forward towards the headstock farther than you need. Then set the intonation for each string. By doing this, you are tightening the saddle adjustment screws to intonate the string. Keeping the screws tight eliminates them from being a source of buzz/rattle.
Ka is a wheel.

I've had my E bridge saddle rattling in it's slot. It took making sure the spring on the adjust screw kept tension on the bridge was the solution. Check if that is it by holding the offending string's bridge with one hand and pluck the string and see if that stops the buzz.
