The Renegades

Post by lyle_from_minneapolis »

I've seen a few clips of The Renegades on YouTube and they seem to have been a pretty exciting group, very hip and hard hitting for 1965.

Do you have any memories or thoughts about them, Roy?

Renegades were from Birmingham but had no success in UK, though I gather they had some success in Scandinavia.

They have 4 singles listed in the rare records guide I use.

Sounds Incorporated were a decent outfit and used to back a lot of acts, only 2 of approx 11 singles they released made top 40 though at 30 and 35 both in 1964.

They did have a number 1 in Australia with a single that was not a hit here their version of William Tell.

They opened for The Beatles at Shea Stadium I believe and it is them or three of them you hear on Good Morning Good Morning on Sgt Pepper.

At some point they changed their name to Sounds Inc. but made no difference.

The drummer went on to be in David Bowie's Band

I always thought their biggest hit in UK The Spartans was a film theme but may be wrong.

If you want to hear the Spartans you will find it

When it comes to holding the bass, the Renegades guy is kinda like the anti- Bill Wyman.

Sounds Inc. were also active in the Hamburg (-61-62) days. I've heard a live recording of their "Wilhelm Tell Overture" from this age. They featured saxes. Is this the same group who opened for The Beatles at Shea??
Searchers amongst my teenage favourite music. Still fond of them, but earnestly a little puzzled they are considered THIS big! But I'm very excited about this forum, and will love to read it regularly, and also contribute!
