Battle Of The Versions 2

Post by royclough »

This song was in just about every groups repertoire in the mid 60's certainly in UK

Here's 4 versions one a hit in US, one a hit in UK, one a miss and other never officially released.

Send me or post your preferred order here

I liked them all again, recognized two of them.

#1 is the original American hit recording, Barrett Strong?
#2 is a Beatles version I have never heard before, I like it better than the album version though, I liked the way they played right through the breaks.
#3 the voice is familiar, this version grew on me as it played, great lead guitar interlude, sounds like they were a good band.
#4 is kind of raw, I liked it also, sounds like American garage rock.
I guess these songs either prove that a great song is a great song or familiarity helps a lot, or as a friend of mine used to say the people like what they know.

2,1,3, and 4, but all are very close to me, I liked all of them. I thought all versions were well done in their respective styles.

I thought I already posted this...?!

2,3,1,4 (I'm prejudiced against horns). Who's no.3? Swinging Blue Jeans, maybe?

3 Bern Elliott and The Fenmen

Am I dreaming, or wasn't it Bern Elliott who later became Shane Fenton who later became Alvin Stardust...?

You're dreaming Nick Shane Fenton (real name Bernard Jewry)became Alvin Stadust so nearly there.

First record I ever bought was by Shane Fenton and The Fentones less we forget.

In fact he will always be Shane Fenton to me.

Kris did you mispost are you saying you prefer Bern Elliot's version to Beatles version, or perhaps as from audition not a far comparison.

No mispost. Now had the Beatles released version been included, that would have been my first choice. The Decca audition version just doesn't have the same drive.

well based on those who did give their preference order of merit was

1.Version 2 - Beatles
2 Version 3 - Bern Elliot
3 Version 1 - Barrat Strong
4 Version 4 - Undertakers

It was a close thing though between the top 2
